The Joke Legislature

October 27, 2010

Some people will wake up this morning and read Andrew Cuomo’s comment about how he is going to investigate “the joke legislature” and say: “Right on, Andrew. Go get ‘em!”

(See the Daily News: Andrew Cuomo Threatens to Turn Investigators Loose on the Joke Legislature)

But it’s a fair bet that 211 state lawmakers have a different view.

They are probably wondering how Cuomo’s comment squares with comments he made earlier this week about the need for good legislative relations: “Lesson 1 from Spitzer: Don’t alienate the legislature on Day 1.”

Well, it doesn’t square, and we’re not sure what to make of the fact that Cuomo is saying some pretty stupid things of late.

He says he is girding for war against the unions at a time when he and all of the Democrats are desperate for union assistance in getting out the vote.

He’s telling people in the suburbs that he’s going to take money away from their school districts and give it to rural and inner city school districts.

He’s going after the GOP state chair as “dirty” for being related to Richard Nixon by marriage.

And now he is saying that he will use the powers of the governor’s office to investigate lawmakers for criminal wrongdoing if they don’t do what he wants.

Cuomo should know better than to couch it in such terms. You simply don’t link your investigations to political goals, however laudable those goals (reform) may  be. Doing so taints the process, and, more importantly, it alienates the lawmakers even before you take office.

< UPDATE: A top Cuomo aide reached out to a friend of ours to say that Cuomo’s remarks were taken out of context, and that he (Cuomo) is determined to work cooperatively with lawmakers. The aide said that Cuomo’s “joke” reference referred not to the legislature specifically, but to state government in general. Our friend insists that the emissary is an honorable person who would not mislead.>

So, another gun-slinging ,clean-up the town marshal. High Noon cometh.

To be sure, Unity Andy has vanished and Mini-Me is on high.

An old adage goes something like this; ” give an individual power and he will do one of two things, either grow or swell and 90% swell ” .

Swell for the rest of us too.
