The Headline You Will Never See
Thank God (or the deity of your choice) for Michael Bloomberg and Andrew Cuomo.
A Jew and a Catholic. A Republican and a Democrat. The grandson of Russian immigrants and the grandson of Italian immigrants.
These are two very different men, but they share at least one thing in common: They both understand that America is all about religious tolerance.
Just because some fanatics cite Allah when committing acts of terrorism, it’s no reason to turn on an entire religion.
Just because a majority of Americans oppose anything related to Islam, it’s no cause to abandon our principles.
At issue is the construction of a mosque in lower Manhattan, which some are trying to establish as a wedge issue in the 2010 elections.
Bloomberg and Cuomo stand virtually alone for the proposition that building a mosque in lower Manhattan strengthens us as a city, state and nation rather than posing a threat.
They know their position is unpopular, but they are standing firm.
It would never happen, but there really should be a headline somewhere that says: “Two NY Pols Put Principle Ahead of Politics.”
