Lazio on the Issues

Posted on Rick Lazio’s website is a 24-page policy paper called “Building a Better New York.” It’s not what anyone would call a bold, out-of-the-box proposal, but it’s solid. (Sort of like Lazio himself, see below.)

Most interesting are the tax proposals on page 13. His plan includes capping property taxes, phasing out the corporate tax for small business, eliminating capital gains tax for startups and reducing energy taxes.

These are all bread-and-butter Republican positions, and this underscores both a strength and weakness with Lazio. What we’d get in a Lazio administration would be the product of consensus among the Republican Party’s best policy minds. Lazio won’t propose anything stupid, but he also won’t stray too far from orthodoxy.
