Parsing Peralta

March 17, 2010

The back story to the Jose Peralta-Hiram Monseratte race in 13th State Senate District in Queens is interesting:

Monserrate effectively ceded control of his campaign to Pentacostal ministers, who dubbed Monserrate a “defender of Christian values” for his opposition to same-sex marriage. (Never mind that domestic violence thing!)

The race pitted the Pentacostals, who have established large congregations in Hispanic communities, against a coalition of unions, gay rights activists and women’s groups.

The promised heavy turnout from Pentacostals never materialized, and Peralta cruised to victory.

The results should concern Senators Rueben Diaz, Sr. and Shirley Huntley. Both could face Democratic primary challengers backed by a similar coalition that supported Peralta.

I’d love to see Ruben Diaz, Sr. get his clock cleaned.
